Wow, what a great way to start out 2008. Creatively!!
So for all or you creative types (writers, poets, painters, sculptors, photographers, singers, entrepreneurs and others), today is the first day of this new year. Where do you start?
Well, first off; make a list, probably on two different pieces of paper. One list will be dreams and the other list will be goals. They may sound the same, but believe me; they are different. Start with your dreaming list. As an artist, entrepreneur, teacher, or just a creative thinker; your mind is constantly mulling through new ideas, creating new products, hashing over others ideas and looking for new twists. These are your dreams.
What do you want to create? Invent? Produce? Share? List them all. On the dreams sheet anything you can dream is good; don’t edit or throw out ideas at this time. Remember it’s the DREAM list!!
Once you have exhausted all your dreams, start on your goals sheet. Here’s where you take your wildest dreams and use them to set goals. Since there’s no right or wrong way to work on these, it’s your choice. Either start with the easiest (dream) and break it down to smaller pieces on your goals sheet; or start with the hardest. Whichever works for you.
By breaking down your dreams into bite size goals, even the impossible becomes achievable. As the old saying goes, “hard by the yard, but a cinch by the inch”.
Having the goal sheet completed to match with all your dreams gives you a roadmap to start working toward those dreams. If you’re a painter and you want to have 10 more paintings done for a gallery exhibit; your goals sheet can be used as a timeline to get this accomplished. This might be attached to your dream sheet of having 5 gallery showings in the next two years. Each step in your goal can be used as a rung toward the top of the ladder: your dream.
New Years Resolutions are great; but most never make it past a month or so. Having your written plan of dreams and goals puts you way ahead. Use and refine these sheets every couple months for a reality check. People change as well as life conditions change. Keeping abreast of these changes allows you to react to your dreams and goals in a timely manner; adjusting as needed.
Have a great year!!
